Under Sullen Skies - Tombs (2020)

Quinto album in studio per la band di Brooklyn, New York, uscito pochi giorni fa, dopo che nei primi mesi del 2020 era uscito l'EP Monarchy of Shadows. Partono da una "base" black metal, e sviluppano le loro canzoni con un attitudine tendente al dark (citano i Joy Division insieme ai Darkthrone, e i Bauhaus con i Neurosis; la dark new wave viene citata palesemente con qualche inserimento di tastiere), mescolando il tutto con atmosfere sludge / doom. Il cantato è sempre harsh (su The Hunger sembra di sentire un inedito dei Motorhead con suoni moderni), soventi alternanze tra tempi velocissimi e rallentamenti cadenzati, sorprendono con aperture armoniche e assoli doppi in stile NWOBHM, molto melodici. Niente di nuovo, ma ben fatto.

Fifth studio album for the band from Brooklyn, New York, released just few days ago, after the EP Monarchy of Shadows was released in early 2020. They start from a "base" black metal, and develop their songs with a dark attitude (they cite Joy Division together with Darkthrone, and Bauhaus with Neurosis; the dark new wave is clearly cited with some insertion of keyboards), mixing all with sludge / doom atmospheres. The singing is always harsh (on The Hunger it seems to hear an unreleased Motorhead with modern sounds), often alternating between very fast tempos and rhythmic slowdowns, they surprise with harmonic openings and double solos in NWOBHM style, very melodic. Nothing new, but well done.
