Fortitude - Gojira (2021)

The seventh album by the French band was one of the most anticipated this year, at least for me. The result is certainly the album of maturity, a record that defines even more deeply the activism of the band (together with the record a fundraising campaign was launched in favor of the rights of the indigenous people of Brazil), already known to most. In addition to the lyrics, the music, consequently, undergoes a strong mutation: if from one hand, death metal has now disappeared, the progressive remains in the taste of rhythmic complexity, the groove in the use and sound of guitars, and the post assumes curious and even courageous forms (the incipit of Fortitude - the song - looks like a metal version of Tom Waits' Bone Machine), the technicality of the entire band is combined with complex forms of word music, specifically aimed at remembering "Amazonian" tribalisms. Very little harsh singing, tracks not too long, robust melodic hooks but with an almost pop taste, in short, one gets the impression of listening to the most inspired Mastodon, recently released from a listening session of Roots by Sepultura. And, even if the shadow of their American colleagues often surfaces along the 52 minutes of Fortitude (the album), the record is one that you could leave on repeat for a long, very long time. Modern metal is right here, and it comes from the heart of Europe.

Quoto tutto.
