Immutable - Meshuggah (2022)

Come fosse un pesce d'aprile, il nono album degli svedesi è uscito il primo del mese. Come a solleticare i critici, il titolo ha spalancato le porte alle battute come "titolo onesto", visto che niente sembra cambiare, negli ultimi anni, nella musica dei Meshuggah. Eppure, di fronte ad un disco del genere, io rimango affascinato. Tredici tracce, tra le quali tre strumentali (uno, They Move Below, anche piuttosto lungo), di una compattezza invidiabile e unica, per un'ora abbondante di musica che somiglia più ad un movimento tellurico, cosa preferibile rispetto a certe ninne nanne. Al contrario dell'angosciante sensazione che può travolgere l'ascoltatore di fronte all'interezza delle composizioni, se si presta attenzione alle diverse linee strumentali, anche quelli che come me, non sanno leggere uno spartito, potranno accedere ad un livello totalmente diverso, ed apprezzare questo disco anche da un altro punto di vista. Un lavoro di insieme che si avvicina più al jazz che al metal, indubbiamente.

Like April Fool, the Swedes' ninth album was released on the first of the month. As if to tickle the critics, the title has opened the doors to jokes as an "honest title", as nothing seems to change in the music of Meshuggah in recent years. Yet, faced with such a record, I am fascinated. Thirteen tracks, including three instrumentals (one, They Move Below, quite long), of an enviable and unique compactness, for an abundant hour of music that looks more like a telluric movement, which is preferable to certain lullabies. Contrary to the distressing sensation that can overwhelm the listener in front of the entirety of the compositions, if you pay attention to the different instrumental lines, even those who, like me, cannot read a score, will be able to access a totally different level, and appreciate this record also from another point of view. An ensemble work that is closer to jazz than metal, undoubtedly.
