Arrows - Red Fang (2021)
Il quinto disco per il quartetto dei simpaticoni di Portland, Oregon, mi pare un riavvicinamento allo stile stoner/sludge, rispetto al precedente Only Ghosts del 2016, seppure, anche ascoltando questo nuovo Arrows, vi sembrerà di essere riportati indietro negli anni '70, ma con sonorità e produzione moderna. Musica muscolare, prepotente, onorevole omaggio ai Black Sabbath (come del resto ogni band che si avventura nel campo stoner/sludge/doom, ça va sans dire), tracce che se ne fregano dei ganci melodici, e spesso anche della forma-canzone, eppure, se vi piacciono i QOTSA, questa band musicalmente somiglia loro moltissimo (senza mancare di personalità propria, intendiamoci), con la sostanziale differenza che non si fermano così spesso (direi quasi mai) a guardarsi nello specchio, a dirsi "oh come siamo bravi". E giusto per farvi capire bene, per me è un grosso complimento.
The fifth album for the quartet of funny guys from Portland, Oregon, seems to me a rapprochement to the stoner/sludge style, compared to the previous Only Ghosts of 2016, even if, even listening to this new Arrows, you will feel like you are being brought back to the 70s, but with modern sounds and production. Muscular, overbearing music, honorable homage to Black Sabbath (like any band that ventures into the stoner/sludge/doom field, ça va sans dire), tracks that don't care about melodic hooks, and often also about the song-form, yet, if you like QOTSA, this band musically resembles them a lot (without lacking their own personality, mind you), with the substantial difference that they don't stop so often (I would say almost never) to look in the mirror, to say "oh how are we good ". And just to make you understand, for me it is a big compliment.
