Baptize - Atreyu (2021)

L'ottavo album per la band di Yorba Linda, California, mi ripropone i pro e i contro, i dubbi e le certezze del precedente, In Our Wake, del 2018. Quello fu il mio primo approccio con loro, e fui piuttosto positivo: mi ricordavano (e lo fanno ancora, qua c'è pure un'ospitata di Jacoby Shaddix) i Papa Roach, una band che mi è sempre piaciuta, con tutti i suoi difetti, quindi probabilmente non detti troppo peso alle parti peggiori. Ricapitoliamo: gli Atreyu fanno un metalcore molto pop, se vogliamo, con grandi ganci melodici, alcuni davvero degni di nota, alternano parti molto pesanti ad altre appunto, molto melodiche, e ogni tanto osano inserti elettronici, come pure altre trovate poco metal. La voce pulita, quella di Brandon Saller, è sia bella che potente, ed è un plus. Il problema è che quando si limitano al metalcore più "classico", sono bravi, anche se poco originali, ma melodicamente accattivanti. Quando si lasciano andare troppo al pop, rischiano il ridicolo, lo stucchevole. Nonostante tutto, il disco si fa ascoltare.

The eighth album for the band from Yorba Linda, California, brings me back the pros and cons, doubts and certainties of the previous one, In Our Wake, from 2018. That was my first approach with them, and I was quite positive: they remind me (and they still do, on this album there also Jacoby Shaddix as a guest) the Papa Roach, a band I've always liked, with all its flaws, so I probably didn't give too much weight to the worst parts. Let's recap: Atreyu make a very pop metalcore, if you want, with great melodic hooks, some really noteworthy, alternating very heavy parts with others, very melodic, and every now and then they dare electronic inserts, as well as others tricks, not so metal. The clean voice, that of Brandon Saller, is both beautiful and powerful, which is a plus. The problem is that when they limit themselves to the more "classic" metalcore, they are good, even if not very original, but melodically captivating. When they indulge too much in pop, they risk ridicule, cloying. Despite everything, the record makes itself heard.
