Blue Alert - Anjani Thomas (2006)

Per la serie ripescaggi di un certo livello, oggi parliamo di Anjani Thomas, nata ad Honolulu, Hawaii, 61 anni fa. Impara canto, a suonare piano e chitarra, si trasferisce a Boston per studiare al Berklee, poi a New York per l'inizio della sua carriera musicale. Mentre suona nei locali jazz, viene notata dal produttore John Lissauer, che intorno al 1983, la assume per i cori su Hallelujah, dall'album Various Positions, di un tizio chiamato Leonard Cohen. Dal 1985 diventa una delle collaboratrici più fidate di Cohen, seguendolo in tour come backup vocalist e tastierista, e diventa pure compagna di vita, anche se quest'ultima cosa non risulta su tutte le biografie di Cohen. Come che sia, dal 2000 Anjani ha una carriera solista, seppure molto parca di uscite: ad oggi solo quattro album, tra i quali questo è il più noto ed acclamato come un piccolo cult. Dieci tracce tutte composte da Anjani, mentre le liriche sono tutte di Cohen (Nightingale era già stata "usata" da Cohen su Dear Heather, e lo stesso riutilizzerà un paio di tracce sui suoi dischi), di un jazz molto fruibile e delicato, una voce notevole, ed un talento compositivo che forse avrebbe meritato di più.

For the repechage series of a certain level, today we are talking about Anjani Thomas, born in Honolulu, Hawaii, 61 years ago. She learns singing, playing piano and guitar, she moves to Boston to study at Berklee, then to New York for the start of her musical career. While she plays jazz clubs, she is noticed by producer John Lissauer, who around 1983, hires her for the backing vocals on Hallelujah, from the album Various Positions, by a guy called Leonard Cohen. From 1985 she became one of Cohen's most trusted collaborators, following him on tour as a backup vocalist and keyboardist, and also became a life partner, even if the latter thing is not in all Cohen's biographies. Whatever it is, since 2000 Anjani has had a solo career, albeit very sparing of releases: to date only four albums, among which this is the best known and acclaimed as a small cult. Ten tracks all composed by Anjani, while the lyrics are all by Cohen (Nightingale had already been "used" by Cohen on Dear Heather, and he will reuse a couple of tracks on his records), of a very usable and delicate jazz, a remarkable voice, and a compositional talent that perhaps it deserved more.
