Il film è ambientato a Monaco di Baviera nel 1955. Veronika Voss è una famosa star del cinema tedesco che si dice sia stata amante di Joseph Goebbels ma che ora stia lottando duramente per ottenere ruoli. Incontra un giornalista sportivo di nome Robert Krohn ed è colpita dal fatto che non sappia chi sia. I due iniziano una storia d'amore, anche se Robert vive già con la sua fidanzata Henriette, che tuttavia si rende conto che Veronika ha un fascino irresistibile.
Secondo "atto" della Bundesrepublik Deutschland Trilogie, seppure ultimo ad uscire cronologicamente, insieme a Il matrimonio di Maria Braun e a Lola, come gli altri ha per protagonista una donna ed è ambientato nel dopoguerra. Ispirato alla vera vita di Sybille Schmitz, attrice che Fassbinder ammirava moltissimo, è pensato come un thriller e ispirato a Viale del tramonto di Wilder, è uno dei film più fassbinderiani di Fassbinder, asimmetrico e quasi camp. Sghembo ed intrigante.
Second "act" of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland Trilogie, albeit the last one to be released chronologically, together with The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola, like the others, it has a woman as its protagonist and is set after the war. Inspired by the real life of Sybille Schmitz, an actress whom Fassbinder admired very much, it is conceived as a thriller and inspired by Wilder's Sunset Boulevard, it is one of Fassbinder's most Fassbinderian films, asymmetrical and almost Camp. Crooked and intriguing.
