Blue Weekend - Wolf Alice (2021)

Terzo album per la band londinese, primo che ascolto per intero e con attenzione: non chiedetemi perché, ma qualcosa mi ha sempre fatto desistere fino ad oggi. Nati come duo acustico, avvicinatisi alla forma rock in seguito, sono descritti come "i figli del folk e del grunge". Non ci sono solo questi due elementi, naturalmente, a costruire il loro suono, bensì molti molti altri, ed il rischio di diventare "solo" pop è costantemente dietro l'angolo virtuale. Per dirne una, Delicious Things sembra una cover di Karmacoma da pianobar, in chiave soft rock, mentre l'intro di Lipstick on the Glass sembra un inedito dei Cocteau Twins, ma troverete altre similitudini, altre influenze (mi viene da pensare siano quasi troppe). Le coordinate sono quindi un po' queste, e i quattro componenti, come forse saprete guidati dalla voce (e dalla chitarra) di Ellie Rowsell, accattivante quanto basta, fanno del loro meglio per rendere il tutto interessante. Ci riescono? A mio giudizio, a fasi alterne. Songwriting decente, ma non entusiasmante, devono secondo me lavorare ancora sull'amalgama e sulla stratificazione.

Third album for the London band, the first one that I listen fully and carefully: don't ask me why, but something has always made me give up until today. Born as an acoustic duo, which later approached the rock form, they are described as "the lovechild of folk and grunge". There are not only these two elements, of course, to build their sound, but many many others, and the risk of becoming "just" pop is constantly around the virtual corner. For one thing, Delicious Things looks like a pianobar cover of Karmacoma, in a soft rock key, while the Lipstick on the Glass intro looks like an unreleased Cocteau Twins, but you will find other similarities, other influences (I think they are almost too many). The coordinates are therefore a bit like this, and the four components, as you may know led by the voice (and guitar) of Ellie Rowsell, captivating enough, do their best to make it interesting. Do they succeed? In my opinion, on and off. Decent but uninspiring songwriting, they still have to work on amalgamation and layering in my opinion.
