Scaled and Icy - Twenty One Pilots (2021)

Partiamo dal titolo. Scaled and Icy (come scritto nel titolo del post, alla lettera "squamoso e ghiacciato") è un gioco di parole che parte da "Scaled back and isolated" (ridimensionato e isolato), una frase che il frontman Tyler Joseph ha associato alla musica prodotta durante la pandemia di COVID-19, sebbene la frase sia anche un anagramma di "Clancy is dead", un riferimento al protagonista di il loro album precedente, Trench. Anche questo album è una sorta di concept, ma non ci perderò troppo tempo: sappiate che questo disco è più solare, più ottimista dei precedenti. E si sente fin dall'apertura con Good Day (titolo quantomai esplicativo), una traccia quasi beatlesiana. Pochissimo hip hop, molto synth-pop, di altissima qualità: un songwriting così, molte band se lo sognano. Abbattute le barriere mentali, o un certo snobismo che, faccio ammenda, io per primo pratico come sport principale, i Twenty One Pilots sono probabilmente LA band pop per eccellenza, e Tyler Joseph potrebbe tenere lectio magistralis sulla composizione di hit.

Let's start with the title. Scaled and Icy is a play on "scaled back and isolated", a phrase frontman Tyler Joseph associated with music produced during the COVID-19 pandemic, though the phrase is also an anagram of "Clancy is dead", a reference to the protagonist of their previous album, Trench. This album is also a sort of concept, but I won't waste too much time on it: know that this album is more sunny, more optimistic than the previous ones. And you can hear it right from the opening with Good Day (an explanatory title), an almost Beatlesian track. Very little hip hop, a lot of synth-pop, of very high quality: a songwriting like this, many bands dream of it. With mental barriers broken down, or a certain snobbery which, I make amends, I am the first to practice as my main sport, Twenty One Pilots are probably THE pop band par excellence, and Tyler Joseph could give a lectio magistralis on the composition of hit singles.
